Questions We Get a Lot
A louvered pergola features adjustable roof slats that let you control how much sunlight and airflow your space receives, making it incredibly versatile across different weather conditions. A screen pergola adds a fabric or mesh enclosure that provides shade and privacy while keeping the space open and airy. Both styles create a defined outdoor living area — the right choice depends on how much weather protection and enclosure you prefer.
Permit requirements vary by city, county, and HOA, so we always recommend checking with your local building authority before installation. Many freestanding pergolas fall below the size threshold that triggers a permit requirement, but it is worth confirming for your specific structure and property. We suggest downloading the product dimensions from the listing to share with your local planning office if needed.
Most of the pergolas in this collection are designed to be anchored to a variety of surfaces including concrete, pavers, composite decking, or a prepared ground base — the specific anchoring hardware and instructions are included with each structure. We recommend reviewing the installation guide for your chosen model before selecting your site. Proper anchoring is essential for stability, especially in areas with higher wind exposure.

About Our Pergolas
A pergola is one of the most rewarding additions you can make to a backyard — and one of the most considered. At its core, a pergola is a freestanding or attached outdoor structure that creates a defined living space beneath an open, louvered, or screened roof. It gives your yard a sense of architecture and intention, turning an open lawn into a place where your family actually wants to linger. Whether you are looking to frame a dining area, shelter a lounge space from afternoon sun, or simply bring a sense of enclosure to a wide-open patio, a pergola does the work a piece of furniture alone never can. When choosing one, think about how you plan to use the space: do you want adjustable shade and airflow, or full overhead coverage? How does the structure's footprint fit your yard? What materials will hold up to your local climate over years of use? A well-chosen pergola is not just an outdoor product — it is the foundation of a backyard you will return to every single day.
